This inter-American human rights treaty has served as the basis for the adoption of laws and policies on prevention, eradication and punishment of violence against women in its States Party, as well as the formulation of national plans, the organization of campaigns and the implementation of care protocols and services, among other initiatives. The Convention has made a significant contribution to strengthening the Inter-American Human Rights System.<p>\n\n<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4235 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/test.belemdopara.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/violencia_hacia_mujer.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"673\" height=\"402\" \/>\n\n<br><strong>How is violence against women defined?<\/strong>\n\n<p>In <strong>Article 1<\/strong>, the Convention defines violence against women as \u201c\u2026any act or conduct, based on gender, which causes death or physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, whether in the public or the private sphere.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Article 2<\/strong> recognizes three types of violence:\n<ol>\n \t<li>Physical violence<\/li>\n<li>Sexual violence<\/li>\n<li>Psychological violence<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The Convention also highlights three spheres where this violence\ntakes place:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>In private life<\/strong><br>\nViolence that occurs within the family or domestic unit or within any other interpersonal relationship, even when the perpetrator no longer lives with the victim.<\/li>\n<li><strong>In public life<\/strong><br>\nViolence that is perpetrated by any person and occurs in the community, in the workplace, in educational institutions, health facilities or any other place; and<\/li>\t\n<li><strong>Violence that is perpetrated or condoned<\/strong> by the state or its agents regardless of where it occurs.<\/li>\n\n<\/ol>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4244 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/test.belemdopara.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/ni_una_menos-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"703\" height=\"528\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fight against women\u2019s violence For the first time, the Bel\u00e9m do Par\u00e1 Convention establishes women\u2019s right to live a life free of violence.
